Meet the growers

The Green House Growers
Piotr Pazola

It’s thanks to the hard work and dedication of growers across the country that we’re able to celebrate British tomato season with so many delicious varieties each year.

Meet some of the growers working to keep shops and shelves well-stocked.

The Green House Growers have been cultivating fresh, sustainable food since 1977. Starting as a small family business on 2.5 acres of land, they now produce tomatoes on almost 100 acres across farms in Sussex and Norwich. The Sussex farm is overseen by Head Grower Piotr Pazola.

From firm and juicy Roternos, sitting big and bright on the vine, to intensely sweet cherry Piccolos, we grow seven varieties of tomatoes on our farms, each chosen for their delicious taste.

“We’re pioneers in eco-friendly farming and believe it’s a natural choice for cultivating the best quality crops.”

We’re pioneers in eco-friendly farming and believe it’s a natural choice for cultivating the best quality crops. Our carbon footprint is amongst the lowest of any producer in the UK and we promote sustainable methods to other growers and wider groups such as politicians, industry and students.

High-tech computer systems control the temperature, humidity and watering of our greenhouses, 24 hours a day. They ensure perfect growing conditions, in the most efficient ways. Any waste CO2 from our production process, we pump back into our greenhouses to be absorbed by the plants.

We don’t waste a drop of water, collecting rain from our greenhouses to irrigate our crops. We store it in our own large reservoir, blooming with reed beds and home to swans, ducks and other wildlife. And at our Norfolk farm, in a world-first, we harness energy from a nearby water treatment plant. Whether it’s from showering or washing the dishes, your water could be helping to heat our greenhouse in Norwich.

When it comes to pest control, we’re ably assisted by our army of predatory insects. Shunning harmful pesticides means we’re able to rely on bumblebees to help us to pollinate our plants – just as nature intended.

A lot has changed since we started up in the 70s, but our values remain the same – to grow the tastiest, freshest, most sustainable toms around.

And nothing makes us happier than receiving feedback from customers like this:

“I LOVE the ruby jewel tomatoes, great shape and full of flavour. These are the only ones I will buy aside from growing my own.”
