Defra’s review of supply chain fairness in horticulture

Following the Farm to Fork Summit held at Downing Street in May 2023, the government announced they would conduct a review into fairness in the horticultural supply chain to support British growers and improve food security.

To feed into that review, they have released a consultation looking at contractual relationships in the UK fresh produce industry.

This consultation is a key opportunity to share grower views and experiences of supply chain contractual challenges with Defra. The BTGA will be responding to the consultation in collaboration with other grower associations, including the British Growers’ Association. We will focus our response on key areas including the timing of programming and long-term contracts with retailers.

“The fresh produce sector has faced numerous significant challenges in recent years that have impacted crop production across the sector. Energy, fuel, and labour costs have risen significantly at the same time as the sector has dealt with the impacts of unprecedented and volatile climate conditions. The impacts can be seen across the sector...

This consultation is our next step in delivering on the UK government’s commitment to consult on the need for supply chain fairness regulations on a sector-by-sector basis”
